Search for Christina Superintendent Down to Two

By Kristen Walsh, Observer Staff Reporter

From 17 applicants down to two finalists, the search for Christina School District’s next superintendent is quickly coming to a conclusion.

On Friday, April 3, the Christina Board of Education announced the final candidates as Marcia V. Lyles, Ed.D. and Freeman Williams, Ed.D.

This decision came after the remaining four finalists, Lyles, Williams, along with Donna Micheaux and Emmanuel Caulk, participated in interviews and forums with the public, staff, parents, school board, and other key members of the community.

Marcia V. Lyles is the Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning with the New York Department of Education. Her 32 years of experience includes positions like high school English teacher, principal, and regional superintendent for the New York Department of Education.

Freeman Williams has been the Interim Superintendent for the Christina School District since February 2009, when Dr. Lillian Lowery stepped down after being chosen as Gov. Markell’s Secretary of Education. Before his appointment, he was the Assistant Superintendent for Student and Administrative Services for Christina. The majority of his 34 years in education were spent working in Delaware.

The next step in the search process is for the board to hold site visits at the candidate’s home districts.

The school board plans to appoint the new superintendent by April 21, with July 1 as the official start date for the candidate.
