A former All-American quarterback for the University of Delaware has been identified as the victim of a fatal drunk-driving accident in Athens, Greece.

William “Jeff” Komio, who had a brief stint in the NFL in the 1980’s, had been a fugitive from the law since 2005 after failing to show up for a sentencing on two separate drunk driving convictions in Pennsylvania.

According to the Washington City Paper, Komio, who went into the insurance business after his football career ended, was also being investigated for suspicious fires at two homes he owned, cocaine possession, assault, and money laundering in a multimillion dollar international fraud scheme.

Komlo was a star quarterback at the University of Delaware in the late 1970’s, leading the Blue Hens to the Division II national championship game in 1979.

He was able to last four years playing in the NFL. Drafted by the Detroit Lions, he threw for 2238 yards and 11 touchdowns his first season. He later played a backup role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring in 1983.

The FBI is still collecting details in Komlo’s death. It’s unclear what caused the accident, and whether or not Komlo was to blame.

Komlo appeared in a spot on the long-running Fox television show America’s Most Wanted back in 2005, and was “outraged” when it aired.

“I’m not a criminal, and I would like to get this resolved,” Komlo told the Philadelphia Inquirer at the time, “I’m not above any law.”
