Today is Election Day for the 5th District

Polling places will be open today in Newark for a special election that will fill the 5th District New Castle County Council seat vacated by Stephanie McCellean, a Democrat who resigned to become Governor Jack Markell’s policy director.

Voters will have the opportunity to make a choice between Democrat Lisa Diller or Republican Jamie Moulthrop.

Diller is a pastor of the Christiana Presbyterian Church. She holds a Doctorate from Princeton University, and is a former administrator for the State of Delaware’s Office of Volunteerism under Gov. Ruth Ann Minner.

“My experience with nonprofit organizations and government agencies gives me both management experience and an understanding of the importance of constituent services,” said Diller. “I have the knowledge and experience to work to find solutions for the problems that are most important to residents of the 5 district.”

Moulthrop started his career in financial services with MBNA, and has financial expertise garnered from his full-time job as a tax preparer with Jackson-Hewitt. He is also a den leader with Cub Scout Pack 444, and spends most of his time volunteering with the Freedom Trail District Boy Troop 283.

“New Castle County faces a difficult financial situation. Our economy is in recession and the County will need to make some tough budget choices over the coming years. I believe that my financial background will be a real asset on County Council” Moulthrop said. “By taking a critical look at the county’s finances, we can uncover wasted dollars and help save taxpayer money.”
