This Day in Delaware History:
1683 William Penn presided in court at New Castle and naturalized Swedes and Dutch citizens of which there were 116.
1861 The General Assembly ordered a tombstone for former Governor Joseph Haslet (1811-14; 23) at Cedar Creek Village near Milford.
1868 President Andrew Johnson futilely appointed New Castle’s General Lorenzo Thomas as interim Secretary of War, a move that led to the President’s impeachment.
1945 Pfc. Ralph Webber of Townsend wrote his parents from somewhere in Germany that he thought the war would soon be over and he was looking forward to coming home. Two days later he was killed in combat.
