This Day in Delaware History:
1832 The Wilmington Savings Fund Society first opened its doors for business on Wilmington’s Market Street between 5th and 6th Streets.
1837 With many farmers’ lands worn out, the General Assembly commissioned Professor James C. Booth of Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute to conduct Delaware’s first state-wide geologic survey.
1944 Richard McMullen, former governor (1937-41), died at age 76. He had declined running for a second term in 1940 because of a heart attack during the campaign.
1979 The city of Wilmington received 16 1/2 inches of snow in 24 hours.
