In a wild contest marked by late scoring runs by both squads, the Hodgson Vo-Tech Silver Eagles (13-6) held on to win at home against the spirited Caravel Buccaneers (11-8), 70-68. Caravel senior center Erique Gumbs led all scorers with 27 points, while Hodgson was led by junior center Joel Brokenbrough’s 19.

The first quarter of the game was merely the calm before the storm, with both teams trading blows, matching one another shot-for-shot, leaving Hodgson with what appeared to be a precarious 1-point lead after 8:00 had elapsed, 14-13. Both coaches made adjustments coming into the second quarter—Hodgson went to a 2-3 zone in a temporarily successful attempt to neutralize Caravel’s size advantage in the paint; meanwhile, a rare deployment of the full-court press by the Buccaneers backfired.

After breaking Caravel’s press resulted in a dramatic dunk by Brokenbrough, the junior center took control of the second quarter. His eight points and a key blocked shot over a three-minute span in the second, accompanied by aggressive penetration off of the dribble by Hodgson’s freshman guards Ty Hudson and Paris Ridgeway-Higgs, enabled the Silver Eagles to establish an ostensibly solid 10-point advantage going into halftime leading 37-27.

Hodgson came out of the locker room after the half playing some particularly stifling defense, holding Caravel scoreless for the first 2:48 of the third quarter. By the time that Buccaneers senior forward Eric Buckland scored their first point of the half at the foul line, Hodgson, keyed by Ridgeway-Higgs and junior forward Larry Bailey, had extended their lead to 16. Trailing 46-30 with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter, Caravel’s hopes seemed to be slipping away.

Though Hodgson shifted between man-to-man and 2-3 zone defenses for most of the game, Caravel was consistent in their own man-to-man look throughout. While the Buccaneers seemed timid earlier, for the last 12 minutes of the game they played their man-to-man with renewed vigor and intensity, pushing Hodgson farther and farther toward the perimeter. When Hodgson penetrated into the paint, the Caravel defense was intimidating, forcing the Eagles’ guards to kick passes to the outside, rather than drive to the basket.

Caravel’s tenacity on defense was complemented by better execution on the offensive side as well, such that by the end of the third quarter their deficit had been narrowed, 54-49, on the back of two three-point field goals by senior guard Ryan Anderson, and another three-pointer by Gumbs.

It was in the fourth quarter that Gumbs, in only his second game back from an injury that had caused him to miss 11 games, truly shined. The senior center scored 10 points in the final 4:20 of regulation, adding a steal and assist that resulted in a breakaway basket for Anderson. In the end, despite Caravel’s spirited late effort, and despite losing junior forward Austin Brunswick (9 points) to fouls, Hodgson played just well enough to hold on to victory. Both Hudson and Ridgeway-Higgs sank a pair of free throws in the final 26 seconds of the game to ensure a Silver Eagles triumph.

“We had too many missed opportunities,” said Caravel coach Tom Wiley after the game. “We have to be aggressive and make stops,” he added. In that he can take pride. Unfortunately for Caravel, it came just a bit too late.
